When someone searches “coffee near me” or “tyre shop open now”, Google shows a map with three businesses before any normal results. Getting into that map pack is the single biggest win for most local businesses — and most of it is free.
How Google decides who shows up
Google says local results are based on three things:
- Relevance: how well your profile matches what someone searched for.
- Distance: how far you are from the searcher, or from the place they named.
- Prominence: how well known you are — including links, articles and your number of reviews and rating.
You can’t move your shop closer to everyone, so focus on relevance and prominence. Google is clear that “there’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking”.
Step 1: Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
- Verify the business. Verified profiles are far more likely to appear.
- Pick the most specific primary category (“Tyre shop”, not “Store”), then add secondary ones.
- Fill in everything: hours, holiday hours, phone, website, services, products and attributes like parking or wheelchair access.
- Add real photos of your storefront, team and work, and keep adding new ones.

Step 2: Make reviews a habit
BrightLocal’s 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey shows how much reviews now matter:

Two takeaways: recency matters (a steady trickle beats a burst every two years), and replies matter. Answer every review, good or bad, in your own words — half of consumers are put off by generic, templated replies.
Step 3: Match your website to your profile
- Use the exact same business name, address and phone number everywhere.
- Give each main service its own page, with the town or area you serve in the heading.
- Embed a map and your opening hours on the contact page.
- Add LocalBusiness schema markup so search engines read your details correctly.
A 15-minute weekly routine
- Reply to new reviews.
- Post one update or offer to your profile.
- Add two or three new photos.
- Check that your hours are still right, especially before holidays.

Frequently asked questions
How long does local SEO take to work?
Profile fixes can show results in a few weeks. Building reviews and local authority is ongoing, and most businesses see steady gains over three to six months.
Should I respond to negative reviews?
Yes — calmly, briefly and in your own words. Thank them, address the issue and offer to continue offline. Future customers read your reply more than the complaint.
Can I rank in a town where I don’t have an address?
It’s harder in the map pack, which is driven by distance. Service pages for each area you serve help you appear in the normal results there.
